LG confirmed to release a curved phone soon, dubbed G Flex (Updated with specs)

Curved phones are soon going to be a reality, and one of the very first may come from LG.

According to CNet’s Roger Cheng, LG is preparing to launching a 6-inch curved display phone called G Flex. Don’t let the name mislead you though – the device itself will not be flexible, but it will feature a plastic based OLED (POLED) screen that bends around the phone’s curved profile.

The G Flex seems to be the commercial name of the LG Z device that ZDNet Korea reported on yesterday. LG Z could be just an internal codename for the project, though the final name is allegedly still on the table. The LG G Flex may launch in November, though delays are possible, reports Cheng.

So, what should we expect from this pioneering new design? It won’t be anything crazy, that’s almost sure. The image below, extracted from a patent filing, should give you an idea of the actual curvature of the screen. Supposedly, “the curve is dramatic enough to comfortably fit around your face but not so angular that it looks weird.”

If you remember the launch of the Galaxy Nexus, Google teased a curved phone, but that sadly turned out to be just an exaggeration. The LG G Flex, on the other hand, may actually be worthy of a teaser like this:

Flexible displays have been a long way coming, but now it looks that Samsung and LG are both ready to finally deliver commercial products. Samsung is going to release the first curved screen device next week in South Korea, possibly a limited edition of the Note 3.

Update: a Japanese blog identified a device codenamed LG-F340L that fits the description of G Flex/LG Z in the GFXBench benchmark database. Here are the possible specs:

• Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 @ 2.3GHz
• HD resolution ( 1280 x 720)
• Model info: lge / z_lgu_kr / zee: 4.2.2/JDQ39B/F340L_LAP8974JMR1R130820.1376962998: userdebug / test-keys

• Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
